Artist Statement
Spirited is an abstracted representation of the noble human spirit.
Just as white light contains the entire spectrum of colours, the blank white canvas symbolizes of an infinite field of possibility – relating to physics it defines pure energy – spiritually, it represents the divine ether from which all thought, matter and action originate. The square is an ancient symbol of the Earth - represented by the four elements of fire, earth, wather and air.
Red signifies passion, power, fire, heat – a primal colour of base instinct. The symbol of the horse is a reoccurring theme in my work. The horse is a living, breathing vehicle of un-paralleled beauty, critical to the civilization and evolution of mankind. Throughout time, the horse’s archetypal imagery has been linked to the idea of nobility. The fact that the horse is coming directly at the viewer speaks to the ideas of nobility of spirit, confidence, honesty and integrity.
The inspiration for Spirited came from one of my poems;
Unchallenged, before the wind
The horse is Spirit - and Spirit mine
you shall forever remain
unbridled
Spirited was painted with abandon - using powerful, energetic brush strokes from the core of my being.
I believe Spirited to be my masterpiece to date.
